Bordeaux superstar

Our top wines

I must admit that, in more than 30 years as a wine writer, I have never experienced a tasting at such a consistently high level - with wines from one single wine growing region and from two vintages only. Subject of our tastings were the two Bordeaux vintages of 2009 and 2010 - in a proportion of about two thirds to one third -, two vintages which, already during the relative en primeur tastings had been acclaimed as vintages of the century. And, although I hate this kind of declarations - even more so if the century in question is only 11 years old -, I had to acknowledge that the wines in my glasses during the various tasting sessions were just stunning.

Thanks to an invitation of the winegrowers association CIVB and the help of both the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855 and the Association des Grands-Crus Classés de Saint-Émilion I was able to taste a total of 330 wines, during a trip to Bordeaux and in several tastings at our offices in Hamburg. Only once in the last 30 years I had tasted a vintage with similar scores, but with the difference that I had tried only three dozen of the most prestigious wines of the 1982 vintage, whereas this time, 100 oder even 200 wines of a very wide range were poured into my glasses. An amazing third of all the wines tasted received scores of 5 stars (or better), and it was really difficult to find any really dissapointing samples.

If the 2010 vintage scored even better than the 2009 the credit goes to one single feature: its harmony! Whilst the wines of 2009 convinced with their power and opulence, the 2010 eclipsed them with their classical elegance and balance. Of course, in comparisons of this kind you always have to consider that the 2010 wines were barrel samples and that you can never be sure if some Châteaux did not just send you a sample of their best barrel - which could then be quite different in comparison to the bottled wine.

Yet, the most remarkable result of our tastings weren't even the high scores of some many of the very prestigious wines but the fact that wines which you will be able to find for 15, 20 or 30 Euros showed the same superb qualities as well. Thus, 2009 and 2010 could become two vintages of dream wines and of extremely interesting bargains at the same time.
